IR thermography measures emissivity, not actual surface temperature, and those two are often conflated. This means two objects with different surface finishes or materials, but the same actual temperature, will measure as different temperatures in the thermal image. It is important to keep this difference in mind when reviewing thermal imagery. A piece of reference material with a known emissivity, such as black electrical tape, can be used as a temperature calibration reference.
